If you’re like most families who go to the beach in Destin, you’ll likely have some aunts, uncles, parents, siblings, cousins, or kids who’d rather stay dry on the sand than jump into the water.  And if you’re looking for a way to entertain them or unleash some creative energy by building your own sand castle, then keep reading because we’re going to share with you 3 tips for really making your sand castle shine.  Sure, you could buy molds.  But how much space do those take up in your suitcase?  We’re going to show you how to bring some pizzazz to your castles without all the extra baggage.

1. Build A Hole For Mortar.  This may sound basic, but since you’ll be using a mixture of sand and water you’ll want to get it just right.  Mix about the same ratio of water with sand (half and half), erring on the side of more water.  Make sure that it’s not too dry and not too wet.  Mixing this in a large hole (far enough away from the shoreline so that it doesn’t get drenched) will allow you to stomp on it enough until you get just the right texture.

2. Bring a Plastic Knife.  When a toddler exclaims that he wants a staircase alongside the turret, that’s where the plastic knife comes in.  Most people would agree that a solid water pail is essential for building a solid castle, and it is.  But you’ll also be amazed just how much a simple plastic knife can do when it comes to sculpting out stairways, doors, windows, corridors, and brick lines in the castle walls.  Use it often.  Use it well.

3.  Make Sand Pancakes.  If you want to build a structure using something other than a bucket, you can build a tower with several layers of sand pancakes.  As the name implies, simply flop a layer of sand onto your foundation like a pancake, and then add as many layers on top as you choose.

Bonus Tip: Bring a Straw.  If you really have an eye for detail, then you can use a plastic straw to blow away any loose sand.  This helps to add definition to the edges and surfaces to your structure.

Next time you’re in Destin, you’ll now have some extra tools for sculpting a sand castle the whole family can enjoy.  Happy building!
